Interview with Fatüm

日本語ENGLISHLIVE INFO

Fatüm

■ Fatüm

tunecore.co.jp

SUI: Canary

「Amor Fati」

『Canary』MV

SUI: Canary

HIDE-ZOU: Fatüm

Fatüm

SUI : Fati

HIDE-ZOU <-> SUI

HIDE-ZOU: Fatüm

You might believe that Fatüm was founded under the leadership of HIDE-ZOU, but actually it was SUI who reached out first. This interview delves deeper behind the scenes than the official formation interview (Japanese only) that was already released on the Fatüm official website.

Please tell us how Fatüm was born.

SUI: As a vocalist, I wanted a bigger challenge. I was also looking for a path that wasn’t limited to a solo project. Meeting HIDE-ZOU opened up the idea of starting a unit, and after I told him my ideas, we decided to walk that fate together.

HIDE-ZOU: It all started when SUI got in touch with me. As we chatted about our music and how we express ourselves, it felt like we could create a totally new world together. That’s when Fatüm began to move.

■  In fact Fatüm was created after Mana suggested the idea to SUI. You have both been connected to Mana for a long time. Let me ask you something first: what do you remember about the first time you met Mana? What was your first impression?

SUI: MALICE MIZER was the band that wanted me to dig deeper into the scene of visual kei. Even after I became an artist myself, I’ve always been influenced by what all the members of MALICE MIZER were doing. Later, through a certain opportunity, I received the opportunity to be staff for Moi dix Mois. I felt nervous because I was close enough to receive advice directly from Mana, but I also felt truly honoured. At the same time, I felt that the path I had chosen wasn’t wrong.

HIDE-ZOU: From the first time I met Mana, the strongest impression he left was that he thoroughly lives by his own aesthetic. I’ve respected that stance for a long time; not only in the music, but in the way Mana creates an entire world, visuals included.

SUI, when you decided to “nurture” something new, how did you discover your own potential and new ways to express yourself?

SUI: Before starting Fatüm, I had been working on my own solo project, building momentum by applying the skills I learned from playing in bands. However, at some point, I may have been afraid to accept the way things were. I realized that if I could stop worrying about my current situation and be more flexible, it would open up more opportunities to grow. So, I wanted to try to change myself. That was how I found a new way to express myself.”

HIDE-ZOU, what was your first impression when you met SUI face to face?

HIDE-ZOU: The first time we met in person was about nine years ago. We were using the same recording studio at times, and I remember greeting him even during programming. My first impression was that he was a very polite and considerate person.

SUI, what was your first impression when you met HIDE-ZOU face to face?

SUI: The first time was when I greeted him at an event, as a junior band. The impression I was left with is that he spoke to me very kindly.

What was the deciding factor that made you want to work together?

SUI: The fact that he is both a guitarist and a solo vocalist; that combination is one of a kind. But more than that, I respect him as a person.

HIDE-ZOU: First of all, how strong his feelings are and how honest he is about them. His voice is very appealing, but I also felt a strong connection to his uncompromising approach to songs and expression. It made me want to create something new together.

What do you think makes Fatüm different from DAVID?

SUI: That there are three points of view: SUI, HIDE-ZOU, and Supervisor Mana.

Could you tell us about Fatüm’s worldview?

SUI: We operate under the banner of “Magia Fata Gothic”. While my solo project focuses on a decadent world. With Fatüm, we try to make it more fantastical; to make our fans feel things they rarely feel in their everyday lives.

HIDE-ZOU: Our core concept is that everything exists in duality; light and darkness, life and death, hope and despair, love and hatred. Even the most contrasting forces are ultimately two sides of the same whole. We strive to express the beauty and essence that exist in the space right between them.

Since you started working together, have you discovered anything new or unexpected about each other?

SUI: I guess that he is doing things at his own pace. But I’m like that too, so it’s also something we have in common.

HIDE-ZOU: While SUI has a delicate worldview, his will for music and Fatüm is very strong. I have really come to appreciate that mix of sensitivity and strength since we started working together.

SUI, could you explain more fully why the “dark” part inside you feels much stronger than anything like “light”?

SUI: It’s to express the dark parts of myself beautifully. So it’s natural that the core is stronger than the decoration around it. It may look negative at first glance, but I think it’s important as a way of accepting myself.

“Canary” was released on June 24. What feelings did you put into it for the release?

SUI: For the release, we put each of our views of Fatüm into the release. But this piece can’t contain all of our views, so please look forward to what comes next, and to all of our future releases as well.

tunecore.co.jp

What does the title ‘Canary’ mean?

SUI: The intention of a bird that awakens our destiny; the destiny of our unit and beginning.

Was there a moment during the creative process when your artistic sensibilities truly aligned?

SUI: When our ideas for the arrangement perfectly matched.

HIDE-ZOU: There were many moments when the direction of the sound and the scenery we were picturing matched naturally, without much detailed explanation. Although we are different persons, we share an underlying aesthetic.

On the other hand, were there times when differences of opinion or interpretation led to new expressions?

SUI: I strongly feel it when I am singing songs composed by HIDE-ZOU. Singing music written by someone other than myself is very refreshing.

HIDE-ZOU: Even when we look at the same thing, we all experience it differently. We didn’t deny those differences. By clashing our ideas against each other, we created something new;  a colour that is unique to Fatüm; that I could not have created on my own.

What do each of you think is the biggest highlight of “Canary”?

SUI: Our vocals in harmony.

HIDE-ZOU: The way two different voices come together like light and shadow, sometimes stand opposite each other, and then form one world. I want our fans to be able to feel how each voice is unique, and the effect of the two voices intertwine together.

If there’s a recording story that especially stayed with you, please tell us.

SUI: It was amazing to watch the songs evolve, not just through the two of us, but also through Mana’s direction.

HIDE-ZOU: Being inspired by each other’s singing and expressions, and this led to new ideas and interpretations. The songs felt like they had their own lives, and the final versions went way beyond what we could have imagined.

What were you able to express specifically because this is a dual-vocal unit?

SUI: The harmonies on “Canary”. Rather than having just one vocalist sing each song, our approach is to combine our different singing styles, giving each song a new, refreshing expression.

HIDE-ZOU: Emotions, like having different feelings at the same time. You can’t express it on your own at the same time, but two voices can. So you can add light and dark, quiet and movement, strong and weak at the same moment. This also connects to Fatüm’s concert of duality.

What did you feel the first time you heard the finished “Canary”?

SUI: After getting ready, it felt great to finish the release. At the same time, I felt again that this is where it really starts.

HIDE-ZOU: The music, the lyrics, and our duet; which were originally separate elements became one. At that moment, it felt as if “Canary” finally came to life. It felt like it had taken off and was flying on its own.

The lyrics of “Amor Fati” are written by both of you. (music by HIDE-ZOU). How did you share the image and weave the words together in a smoot lyric? Please tell us about the making of it.

SUI: While taking in HIDE-ZOU’s image, I decided that I wanted to become more connected to “Fati”, our fans. Because our main theme had already been decided,  it was easy to gather the words to write the lyrics.

HIDE-ZOU: When I was making the original track, the keyword “lunar eclipse” was close to my heart as inspiration and added more and more words on top of it. After that, SUI made the lyrics follow the theme even more closely.

Please tell us the background or story in the lyrics of “Oraculum.”

SUI: The lyrics are religious, and like a psychological drama. Where “Amor Fati” depicted a love that accepts fate, this one is darker. It portrays a mental world swaying between faith and doubt, truth and fiction.

Regarding the Music Video

While watching the music video of “Canary” I noticed a lot of comments from overseas listeners. How do you feel about Fatüm also being supported by listeners abroad?

SUI: I’m very happy. I believe that if we can build this up together around the world, we might even be able to change the future.

HIDE-ZOU: It’s a real pleasure that visual kei fans are receiving Fatüm’s music and worldview beyond language, culture, and borders. Even if the meaning of every word doesn’t get across, something still comes through in the sound, the duet, and the visuals. It makes me feel that music is truly a universal language.

Please tell us a story from shooting the music video of “Canary”.

SUI: We had a very tight shooting schedule, but I really wanted to shoot in several different locations. We succeeded in doing so and our hard work really shows off in the final video.

HIDE-ZOU: Watching the world of Canary as an MV; which previously only existed inside our minds; slowly materialised through our costumes, the lighting, space, and footage was incredible. It felt as though I was capturing the emotions pouring out from deep inside me directly onto film.

Please tell us the background or story in the lyrics of “Canary.”

SUI: Opposing forces; light and shadow, day and night; come together to shape our destiny and inspire hope. It also carries a strong message that everything happening in our daily lives is interconnected, and that is what keeps the world moving forward.

If there was an impressive moment during shooting, please tell us.

SUI: When our movements just naturally synced up without any rehearsal.

HIDE-ZOU: As the shooting continued, it felt as if places that had been ordinary real spaces were slowly turning into Fatüm’s world. We didn’t even have to talk about it. Our movements and expressions naturally became the same.

What points did you especially insist on in the “Canary” MV?

SUI: As I said in the previous answer, we wanted to shoot at multiple locations, and we succeeded by doing so.

HIDE-ZOU: Instead of just creating a beautiful visual, we wanted to make something that shows the unease, transience, and fragility that is hidden behind that beauty.
Because light exist, shadows can stand out; That contrast is really important in our visuals and I wanted to deeply honor it.

Could you tell us a little more about the costume-making?

SUI: The base was the image of the Sun, the white god, the moon and the dark god. From there, we featured each other’s particular tastes and merged it all together.

HIDE-ZOU: Splendor and decadence, beauty and danger, strength and fragility. We wanted to make a visual that included different kinds of elements. We hope our fans can feel Fatüm’s “duality” not only through the music, but visually as well.

What kind of Fatüm world did you want to express as a visual expression?

SUI: We built the video inspired by the lyrics of “Canary*”. So please enjoy comparing them.

HIDE-ZOU: “Light and darkness, beauty and ugliness, life and death, hope and despair”. These contrasting elements don’t exist separately. They can exist because the other is there. That idea is the core of Fatüm; that all things are two sides of the same coin; That is what we expressed in our visuals.

About Fatüm’s first two live shows

Looking back on May 30’s Fatüm Demonstration Showcase “Vox Dei”. What kind of response or impression stayed with you?

SUI: Our fans at the live show had high expectations for us, and it was clear that they really wanted to enjoy the moment.

HIDE-ZOU: It was the first night we brought Fatüm’s world to life on stage. Songs that had already been recorded became new and exciting for our fans when they heard them live for the first time. I really felt that way about the response that night.

On June 19, Fatüm played its second live show. How did that feel?

SUI: I could clearly feel how much we evolved from the first show.

HIDE-ZOU: Even though it was an event, we built on what we learned from our first show and were able to go much deeper into Fatüm’s world. It felt as Fatüm itself was slowly beginning to take a clearer shape.

How did it feel to perform live as Fatüm for the very first time?

SUI: Although it felt like it was over in an instant, I felt a great sense of fulfilment from having completed it.

HIDE-ZOU: I imagined how the stage would be while composing the music, but there was a view that I only clearly could see once I actually stood there. Duo vocalist, the performance, the space, our fans; I realized that at that moment Fatüm became Fatüm, because everything merged together.

Standing on stage, did a new charm of Fatüm become visible?

SUI: The atmosphere.

HIDE-ZOU: Recordings can deliver a world built in fine detail. Live, there are emotions that exist only in that moment. I realized that range; stillness and motion, beauty and intensity;  is also part of what makes Fatüm so appealing.

Please tell us about the connection with your fans that you felt through the live shows.

SUI: We are connected with our Fati through fate and love.

HIDE-ZOU: Our energy sent out from the stage is received by everyone, and then our fan energy comes back to us. Through that circulation, even the face of the songs changes. At that moment I really felt a deep connection that can only be born at a live show.

What differences do you feel between making recordings and expressing things live?

SUI: A recorded work is an art piece created by us and everyone who cooperates with us. A live show is where we all share that, resonate with it, and make it explode even further.

HIDE-ZOU: I think a recording is something that constructs a world down to the details and leaves it behind. A live show is something that releases that world as energy for a single instant.

About September 13’s Demonstration Showcase *Vox Dei II*

Please tell us how you feel going into this live!

SUI: I promise you a definitive evolution.

HIDE-ZOU: Taking what we gained from the first two shows, I want to show a further evolved Fatüm. As the name “II” suggests, I want it to be a night where we open the next door.

Is there a possibility new songs will be performed at this live?

SUI: Yes we will.

HIDE-ZOU: Of course. Please look forward to it on the day (laughs).

Is there anything you’d especially like fans watching the live to pay attention to?

SUI: Everything.

HIDE-ZOU: I want our fans to watch our show not just as individual songs, but as one creation; including the duet, the performance, the costumes, the lighting, and the space. It would make me happy if our fans could step inside Fatüm’s world.

A venue-limited CD will be sold. If possible, could you tell us a little about what’s on it?

SUI: Please look forward to future announcements.

HIDE-ZOU: I’d like people to look forward to the details when they’re announced, but I hope they’ll receive it as a special release  that only those who come to the venue can hold in their hands.

How are you preparing for this live show?

SUI: We are currently working behind the scenes to deliver the stage visual and new songs.

HIDE-ZOU: Of course playing and singing is important for us; but for Fatüm the world itself is important too, so we’re thinking of the whole stage as one piece. I want to build up the details and then, on the day, forget about them and let the emotion flow.

Why did you choose Ikebukuro EDGE as the venue for “Vox Dei II”?

SUI: Because it’s one of the venues I like.

HIDE-ZOU: EDGE has a unique sense of distance and atmosphere. The boundary between stage and floor is thin, and I think it’s a place where Fatüm’s tension and heat can be conveyed directly.

Final questions

If you had to express Fatüm’s appeal in one phrase, what would it be?

SUI: The Atmosphere.

HIDE-ZOU: “Duelity” Light and darkness, beauty and ugliness, stillness and motion. Opposites coexist, and the beauty born in that in-between is what Fatüm’s appeal is.

Why did you invite MASASHI and Hibiki as support members?

SUI: Because they are fascinating artists. And not only that; We also carefully considered how they would contrast with the core members of Fatüm.

HIDE-ZOU: They both have impressive playing skills, of course, but they also understand the world of the songs and add their own flair. They are a very reassuring pair when it comes to bringing Fatüm’s world to life on stage.

Finally, a message to everyone supporting you.

SUI: I’d be happy if you stay with me all the way on the path I’ve chosen.

HIDE-ZOU: Fatüm has only just stepped to the beginning of its story. I believe this world will keep widening as we meet all of you and share the same time. Please keep watching the scenery that lies ahead, together with us.
