Interview with METALIC

METALIC Thank you very much for this interview!

Can you show us your band’s name in one character in kanji?
And why did you choose this kanji?

KENICHI: 銀 (Gin) (silver)
It feels humble but giving off shining

円 (en) (yen/circle)
A circle can be bigger to get power from people or any experiences.
At the beginning we are so innocent but might have more opportunities by people’s help. We can grow ourselves to learn with other things

What is the one character in kanji to show yourself?
And why did you choose this kanji?

KENICHI: 夢 (yume)(dream)
Dream, it motivates me to be positive even though I don’t have it practically.

GYUH: 流 (ryuu/naga) (flow)
It’s just like a life stream

What brought to you being a musician? Which musician inspired you?

KENICHI: I really don’t know exactly the reason why I got to be a musician. Well it was probably just fun to play with the band. I am impressed at the moment to express myself with music. This could attract me. Before debut as a musician, when I was at my teenage, there were so many bands which inspired me such as The damned, New York dolls, Hanoi rocks, Stray cats, The willard, etc.

GYUH: I have musicians that I respect who made me start the band, and I wanted to be amazing person like them. If I didn’t get their music, what would happen to me.

What music have you recently listened to?

KENICHI: “Against me!” ,”The Living End”, and I’ve been listening to “Queens of the stone age”

GYUH: I’ve been listening to music when I was at my teenage.

What is your current band different from the previous band?

KENICHI: I used to be a lead singer, or sometimes be a guitarist in the band, be a solo singer, and now I sing as play the guitar, so this is the big difference, and having a female drummer is my first experience as well.

GYUH: I am the youngest in the current band who don’t have as much experience as members have, so I have pressure easily. That’s the difference.

What affects your current situation in your band careers ever?

KENICHI: I have been growing as I connect to different people that I have ever met. I have also never ever cared about any careers. I seriously work on my music all the time as I believe this moment.

GYUH: The current music is influenced by all the past music, and we are here, so we should respect it.

What was the best performance ever?

KENICHI: For me, passion is the best all I need, there were so many awesome live shows that I have performed.
Each live show was energetic, so it is so hard to choose the one.

GYUH: It’s so hard also to choose the one because every performance was a wonderful memory of mine.

Why is it so important to perform the live show for rock bands?

KENICHI: I can show the band as itself to audiences, it feels more human being, and every performance can be different, it can be sometimes good or bad, it depends on how it goes. This is just the rock band’s live show, it gives you more energy to live in your life.

GYUH: The rock live shows shake your body emotionally, not only listening to or watching.

What is the fun challenging in your band’s live show?

KENICHI: Singing is fun, and playing the guitar is one of other ways to express myself, this is also fun.

GYUH: It’s sometimes successful, but sometimes not, because of the live show. My challenging is singing every song while playing the guitar. That would develop myself, and each performance is different, they also bring me to aware something new every time, I am honored being able to feel that in every single performance.

Why did you put the name, Night signal”, “Mass of masses”, for two albums?

KENICHI: I wrote all lyrics for both albums so brought my ideas to other members and we decided after our discussion “Night signal” , this is about that I want to be a man who can shine you in a darkness, and it’s also fit able for our feelings, it sounded perfect as 1st album of a brand new band. 2nd album “Mass of masses”, I wanted to be more aggressive to introduce our music massively.

GYUH: I had no choice, depended on him.

What is “Mass of Masses” different from “Night signal”?

KENICHI: Massive of Masses, we focused on music creation actively, and
Night Signal, I think we wanted to express 3 pieces of the band’s music.

GYUH:“Night Signal”, we produced this album right after forming the band, and had already had the specific concept, I think we worked on it along the band’s concept, then we brought each idea into the album. We also discussed personal recorded songs, mixing by Fujiki, designing, etc, It was more open to discuss in the process.

What inspiration brings lyrics to you?

KENICHI: My inspiration is that I live at the moment, and have my emotions that I never forget in the past, such as happiness, anger, sadness, enjoyment, or whatever. This is deep in mind. Writing lyrics is like therapy to be aware of myself with my emotion.

What was the most enjoyable thing about working on the 2nd album?

KENICHI: I enjoyed all the processes, mixing was tough work though, maybe I didn’t realize the tough work was the most fun.

GYUH:I think it was fun generally, but I remember easily that I had a hard time. I have a hard time working on our live show or any other stuff like that. I always can’t afford it at the moment, then realize that it’s fun. It happens all the time.

What are favorite songs in the album “Metalic”, and the reasons?

KENICHI: I like all songs because I was passionate about writing them.

GYUH: I really can’t tell.

You’ve been in the music industry for a long time.
What is the turning point between your early music activity and its latest?

KENICHI: I feel like being in between reality and my goal more than before.

GYUH: Well I haven’t experienced that much in a music circle.
I used to be in a backstage, then I feel like I have been performing at the stage before I realized.

What is the hardest matter to continue to be a musician?

KENICHI: I have a conflict by myself.

GYUH: I think it’s not so difficult to be a musician who just creates music, I mean I don’t wanna be bothered in the process by shitty people who are negative or offensive. Those wouldn’t motivate me to create music.

What makes you smile?

KENICHI: All people who support us.

GYUH: I tend to be sensitive to people’s emotions.

This interview streams overseas.
Where do you wanna live aside from Japan?

KENICHI: Back in the days I visited the Netherlands to record a CD for Justy-Nasty also we took photos for the jacket and for the photo book, I was impressed with how beautiful the Netherlands were at that time. I miss that place, and would love to visit there again. I really wanna live there, and I would love London, New York, San Francisco, Australia, Hawai, as well because they have beautiful scenery.

GYUH: A country which has no racism, or respects citizens.

What is the final target for the future?

KENICHI: I wanna get involved with music until I die, reach out to my goal.

GYUH: That I will survive in my life.

What is your policy as an artist? or any motto you keep telling yourself? Please tell your fans that if you have.

KENICHI: I go my way, that’s my life. I am the only one in my life.
Life is once, so I wanna enjoy my life at my pace.

GYUH: Music is my essential to live just like a lifeline. I think there are certain people who agree with that, so I really want to share that and spend time with the people. I’d love to compose music which can relax and be unforgettable just like old songs, novels, or other works, which have still been loved. It can impress every generation. I do my best to create impressive music even in the difficult times.

Please give a message to your fans and public.

KENICHI: I appreciate JROCK’N’ROLL giving us the opportunity this time, and am thankful to all people who support us all the time. Also thanks very much for anyone else having interests in our band Metallic this time. It is in a difficult situation at the moment that has no ways to stop spreading the covid-19, but I wish you all safe, healthy, and relaxing. Our live shows have been cancelled or put off again and again because of the virus. I hope it will be over soon, and really can’t wait to see you guys in our live show. I will find a new bassist to join our band, and move forward to the future.

GYUH: We are in a tough time to live, and also can’t afford to care for others. It’s just tiring every day. This is our current life. It’s so hard to have a bright future, being anxious around there, but I wanna bring my music which can heal people from painful life at the moment. I’d love to share that with you all joyfully. There are so many things changing, but some are nothing to change. Our band Metallic wants to move forward as staying the things not to change. I think I wanna tell you more about me.
Anyways I look forward to seeing everyone soon.
