CHOKEが示した最新シングル『Hack to the basic』こそが、コロナ禍の時代を乗り越えるための生き方のニュー・ベーシック!!
連日報道番組やワイドショーの題材として印象深く瞼に焼き付けられる「コロナ」の三文字。今も、地球全体が見えない驚異に手をこまねいている。その施策を施す側も、その話題を糞味噌付けて報道する側も、それを受け止める国民も、自分の生きる指針を定められずに右往左往すれば、戸惑いや不安を何かに転嫁しようとしている。たまに思うことがある。我々が怖がっているのは「コロナ」ではなく、情報に振り回されるという言い訳のもと、地に足を着けられずにふらふらしている不安定な自分の気持ちではないかと…。
今年、CHOKEは3枚のシングルを配信リリースした。「人の意見や情報に惑わされるのではなく、自分の意志を持て。でないと、人の言いなりになってしまうぞ」とメッセージした『全然問題ねぇ』。「現状を惨劇(悲しみ)に変えるのも、讃歌(喜び)に変えるのも、自分の心次第」と投げかけた『人間惨歌』。そして、12月25日に配信リリースしたばかりの『Hack to the basic』で彼らは、「世の中が切り捨てようとするのなら、切り捨てればいい。媚びる様を見せるくらいなら、俺らは新しい理想形 (New Basic)を作って生きてくよ」と、未来へ向け自分たちの生きざまを力強く宣言した。
今年のCHOKEは、あえてネガティブな言葉を突きつけ、世の中を皮肉りながら「なにが、あなたにとって大切なのか」を訴え続けてきた。とくに『全然問題ねぇ』と『人間惨歌』では、様々な音楽要素をコラージュしたトリッキーかつオルタナティブでラウドな楽曲を用いて、人間の本質(心の弱さ)をえぐり出しながら、そのうえで一筋の光(希望や救い)を示してきた。
音源をリリースした6月や8月頃は、辛辣な言葉や音楽が、むしろ気持ちを掻き立てる力になっていた。だが、心に平穏が訪れない日々が長く続いていることで、今、誰もが自分を導いてくれる「言葉や力」を求めている。それは、音楽も同じだ。
CHOKEが最新配信シングル『Hack to the basic』で示したのは、2000年代に音楽シーンを席巻したニュー・メタルな音楽スタイル。日本人にはミクスチャーロックと言ったほうが馴染みやすいだろうか。冒頭から不穏な音が流れつつ、そこへ切り込んでゆくのが、地の底へと引き込むような重く歪んだギターの音。反面、リズム隊は重厚ながらも気持ちを騒がす跳ねたビートを叩き出す。そのうえで、REONの闇を切り裂くようなラップが炸裂。ダウナーな音をクロスオーバーした音楽性ながら、心落ちてゆくのではなく気持ちが弾むのは、シャッフルしたリズムという理由以上に、CHOKEが力強く自分たちの生きてゆく指針を示したからだ。

「ぶった切る」という意味も持つ「Hack to the basic」という言葉。そこには、「世の中が自分らの居場所をぶった切ろう(切り捨てよう)と、俺たちは何があっても自分たちのベーシック(場所や存在)は絶対に失わなければ、自分たちで新たな常識を作ってゆく」想いを込めている。
同時に、ニュー・メタル(ミクスチャー)をベーシック(ルーツ)に持つCHOKEのメンバーたちが、「Back to the CHOKE」しながらも、そこへ進化し続ける音楽性を重ね合わせ、CHOKEとしての「New Basic」を作りあげた姿も示していた。
『Hack to the basic』は、メッセージもサウンドも、自分たちのルーツを大切に進化した姿。混沌とした時代の中だからこそ、「自分たちの原点を見失うな」「そのうえで、自分らしい生き方を導き出せ」と人々へ示した「生きるための新しい姿勢や指針」だ。

CHOKE’s latest single, “Hack to the basic” is the new basic of how to survive the CORONA HELL!
“Hack to the Basic,” which was just released on Youtube on December 25th, CHOKE declared their new way of life for the future,
“If the world wants to break us down, let’s stat over and let’s create a brand new ideal (New Basic) and live on.” , they strongly declared their way of life for their own future.
“Hack to the basic,” showcases the new metal music style that swept the music scene in the 2000s. For Japanese, it would be easier to call it “mixture rock“. From the beginning of the song, there is an unsettling sound, which is cut into by the heavy distorted guitar sound that draws you into the depths of the earth. On the other hand, the rhythm section plays a heavy yet uproarious beat. On top of that, REON’s rapping explodes as if cutting through the darkness. Despite the downer crossover sound, the reason why the music makes you feel happy instead of depressed is not only because of the shuffling rhythm, but also because CHOKE showed us a powerful guideline to live by.
The word “Hack to the basic” also means “to cut off” and expresses the idea that “no matter what happens, we will never lose our basic (place and existence) and will create a new common sense by ourselves, no matter how the world tries to cut off our place“.
At the same time, it also shows how the members of CHOKE, whose basic roots are in (mixture) nu-metal, have created a “New Basic” as CHOKE by superimposing evolving musicality on it while “going back to the CHOKE“.
“Hack to the Basic” is an evolution of the band’s message and sound, while keeping their roots intact. It is a new attitude and guideline for living that tells people, “Don’t lose sight of your origins” and “Find your own way to live” in the midst of chaotic times.

KVYA NONO: The tricky style that we showed in our last two releases is also CHOKE, but the essence of what we are is a new metal style. We wanted to go back to our roots and show the positive attitude that we have as CHOKE.
B5: We’ve been living in the air of new metal. We’ve been breathing the air of new metal for a long time, and we’re ready to go back to the live house with the air we had back then.
Toshiya Sato: The three songs we released this year, “Zenzen Mondai Nee -No problem at all-” “The Human Anthem” and “Hack to the Basic,” are the new basic songs for CHOKE going forward into the future. Among them, “Hack to the basic” will definitely be the turning point for CHOKE in 2021.
REON: This year, all the time, yes. As the mood of self-restraint is likely to continue, it has become a basic way of life in modern society. But we can’t just settle down there forever. We have to break through that and move on to the next stage (way of life). We have to go back to the basics, find out what we are, and then come up with a new basic. That’s how we live as CHOKE now…
